Bryn Hughes
I have always been able to draw since before I can remember - my mother told me I was chosen to paint murals on the walls of my primary school in Bryncoch in South Wales. I came to University in Sheffield in October 1962 to study Architecture where I developed my draughtsmanship skills. I stayed on in Sheffield to play rugby for the city where I was able to show my skill in hand to eye to foot coordination with the oval shaped ball.
I did very little artwork for 30 odd years but when my working life changed from producing hand drawn architectural information to producing drawings on a computer I decided to take up more painterly things.
At the start of this millennium I not only took my sketchbook on holidays but I actually started drawing. My preferred technique is to sit in front of a building working directly in pen (without pencil pre-drawing) often with an audience looking over my shoulder. This pressure produces the adrenaline which I hope gives my work a spontaneity, dynamism and lightness. I usually complete my drawings with watercolour.
I was invited by Buxton Museum and Art Gallery in 2007 to give an exhibition of my work which consisted mainly of 40 of my holiday paintings.
I have ventured into digital art with my iPad which is speedy and vibrant (on the screen at least) but the wide stylus head required for this type of technology doesn't give the control of line which is the main feature of my work.
I still continue to draw and paint outside whenever the weather is amenable but over the past couple of years I have taken up painting in acrylics with a palette knife and even more recently, acrylics with collage, finishing off with over-drawing which is the opposite to my previous method of work.
The 2 examples of my work demonstrate the differences.
